2012 National Youth Science Camp

Applications for the 2012 National Youth Science Camp are now being accepted. Top high school seniors are encouraged to apply for this once in a lifetime, expense-paid opportunity!

The National Youth Science Camp, or NYSC, is one of the nation’s premier programs in secondary science education. Since its inception as part of West Virginia’s Centennial Celebration in 1963, the residential summer program has offered educational forums and recreational activities that encourage the development of thoughtful scientific leadership.

Two students are selected to represent each state, and will spend more than three weeks studying the sciences alongside experts. The camp runs from June 27 to July 21 and students must be available to attend for the entire duration of the camp.

Successful applicants will demonstrate superior academic proficiency, including recognition in mathematics and/or the sciences; and application of leadership abilities and social maturity through involvement in both school and community activities.

As part of its educational mission, NPEF began the Health-Care Education Scholarship Program in 2005 for deserving high school seniors, who are pursuing full-time health-care related studies.

The South Dakotans for Nebraska Scholarship Committee is awarding six $1000 scholarships this year to students from the southeastern area of South Dakota. The purpose of this scholarship is to help freshman with the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition.

NASSP and Herff Jones, Inc. are proud to co-sponsor the 2011–12 NASSP/Herff Jones Principal's Leadership Award (PLA). This scholarship award affords high school principals the opportunity to recognize a student leader by nominating him or her for a national scholarship. Students cannot apply for this award. They must be nominated by their high school. High school principals or their designee may nominate only one senior per school to compete.
Scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $12,000 will be awarded to 100 outstanding seniors from all 50 states.

The deadline to submit nominations online is 12:00 a.m. CST Friday December 2, 2011. Students be sure to submit your nomination prior to this date so your principal has time to follow thru on your nomination request.

Each session the Legislature utilizes high school seniors as pages. Pages are appointed to serve in the House of Representatives or the Senate.
Pages distribute legislative documents, run errands for legislators, answer phones, assist in the Legislative Post Office, and attend committee meetings.
Application is made through a sponsoring legislator or legislator-elect. Talk to your sponsor to get your application signed.

The Dakota Corps Scholarship Program was created by Gov. Rounds to encourage South Dakota’s high school graduates to:

*Obtain their postsecondary education in South Dakota
*Remain in the state upon completion of their education
*Contribute to the state of South Dakota and its citizens by working in a critical need occupation

The intent of the program is that the recipients do not pay anything towards tuition and generally applicable fees.

The Dakota Corps Scholarship Program is funded by private businesses, nonprofit corporations, the Governor's Office and the South Dakota Department of Labor.

South Dakota Resource Conservation Speech Contest

Each year the South Dakota Department of Agriculture, Resource Conservation and Forestry Division, sponsors a resource conservation-oriented speech contest. Any SD student in grades 9-12 is eligible to enter.
The contest consists of three levels - local, area and state. Two winners from each of the local contests advance to the area contests. Two winners from each of the seven area contests advance to the state competition.

$2,300 in total scholarships is available:
$1,100 for first place
$750 for second place
$450 for third place
